With the decline in modernism, there has been an effort to acknowledge earlier and current phases of cultural activism. This issue places community based art work in a contemporary context. An online questionnaire by Public Domain asks you to define “communities” and how you place yourself, as an individual and an artist, with them. Other features on the topic include Annette DiMeo Carlozzi’s interview of Mary Jane Jacob, doyenne curator of such public and community based art exhibitions such as “Places With a Past”. The Artists’ Pages is a compilation of artist proposals for community-based works. We set out to evaluate the success of community-based art, to ask the participants from various from various projects whether involvements really did change their lives.
