The cover for our first issue of 1993 is a scan of a dead rooster. The motivation was to make an untrimmed, unbound, and “coverless” issue. The roosters scan, initially planned to be a scan of a chicken, was based, among other things, on Mildred Thompson’s dialogue with Guillermo Gomez Peña and Keith Antar Mason on the significance of a dead chicken in their recent collaborative performance. This interview is the first of this mostly-interview issue. Thompson’s article is followed by Carl Heyward’s discussion with Carolee Schneeman, a performance artist who works with pleasure, rage, and cultural taboos. Performance art and cultural texts are recurring themes in this issue. This issue concludes with a plethora of reviews from recent shows.
