This issue features artists-Hans Haacke, Carrie Mae Weems, and Meschac Gaba- who prefer stepping on toes to tiptoeing. Born in four successive decades, these artists and their careers outline the trajectory of “engaged” art from 1960 to today. The theme of this issue is, for lack of a more compelling term, identity. The political art of the past century is examined in this issue- from Ronald Reagans influence on punk rock, to Adrian Pipers philosophical explorations of race, identity and other pressing issues. The issue concludes with reviews on Sally Mann’s What Remains at Corcoran Museum and Hussein Chalayan’s Project4L at Istanbul Museum of Contemporary Art.
