ART PAPERS 04.01 - Jan/Feb 1980 - SOLD OUT

Volume 4 Issue 1 was the last issue of The Atlanta Art Workers Coalition Newspaper. On page 11 you'll find an announcement reading: "IMPORTANT," "AS OF THE MARCH 1980 ISSUE THE ATLANTA ART WORKERS COALITION NEWSPAPER WILL BECOME THE BIMONTHLY PUBLICATION OF ATLANTA ART PAPERS. THE STAFF OF THIS PUBLICATION IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THE FORMATION OF ATLANTA ART PAPERS, INC. WHICH WILL CONTINUE TO PROVIDE ITS READERS WITH QUALITY COVERAGE OF THE ARTS." The rest is history.

There are several articles of note leading to this announcement, one of which documents a night of avant-garde music at Emory. Another details "Swimmer's Atlanta," a monumental nine-part work by Jennifer Bartlett unveiled at the new Richard B. Russell Federal Building. Bartlett says, regarding taste, "the job of the artist is not to inform the public about art, it's to make art." The structure itself employs metal and enamel surfaces to convey "happy" and "sad" designation: "elliptical forms represent swimmers; from painting to painting these forms encounter numerous obstacles like rocks, boats and whirlpools."

The paper opens with an interview with Peter Morin, the newly appointed Curator of Twentieth Century Art at the High Museum of Art. He discusses, among other things, the need for art education. "Wouldn't it be wonderful if every third grader in Atlanta could recognize and appreciate a Joseph Beuys!" Morin says.
