ART PAPERS 03.05 - Sept/Oct 1979 - SOLD OUT

The September/October 1979 issue of Atlanta Art Workers Coalition Newspaper provides general information on a range of topics: art in public buildings, Dick Robinson's column on the burgeoning Avant-Garde music scene, and the future for art school grads. According to Linda Dubler's "Slouching Toward Hollywood: Goals and Grants At A.F.I," the future for grads was rather bleak even in 1979. Writer Daniel Grant, armed with statistics from RISD and Pratt, echoes a similar sentiment: "only 17 percent of last year's MFAs made any attempt to locate a teaching position and that only 30 percent of all BFAs even visit the placement center during their four years at Pratt."

Internationally-recognized artist Dennis Oppenheim was recently nominated to receive a $100,000 grant for a piece at the Midfield Terminal of the Hartsfield/Atlanta International Airport. His plans were not discussed in the interview, but his perspective on the art world was––when interviewer Dan R. Talley asked Oppenheim whether or not art is still an interrogation of making, Oppenheim responded that "the art world has greatly reduced its curiosity in regards to these measures," adding, "it's a period of sublime retrograde."
